The Wind Among the Pines
The Takasago Pine became very popular after a famous 14th-century Noh play. It is a completely optimistic play that celebrates joy and happiness. Like this incense.
The pine trees of the Takasago and Sumiyoshi shrines celebrate the harmony of man and woman, for, according to legend, they will be united for all eternity: “Even if we live a thousand kilometers apart, separated by rivers and mountains, we do not feel that we live apart; our hearts are one.”
Takasago is also an allusion to life’s journey: “Today is the day. We made up our minds and have finally set sail. Although we were worried that the journey would be long, the gentle wind has carried our boat; the route has been easy. The wind rustles in the Takasago pine; the sun has set. In the distance, the bell can be heard.”
And the work ends with a blessing: “I expel the demons, I embrace good fortune and happiness. Let us celebrate a thousand years of prosperity and ten thousand years of long life. May the wind rustle joyfully among the pines for ten thousand years.”
