Koh Do Agarwood – Reflection and Awareness
Also called aloe, oud, jinkoh, or kyara, agarwood lies for years in silent communion with the earth to create a deep, exquisite, and mysterious aroma. In Japanese tradition, it is one of the woods used in the Koh Do ceremony, the ancient traditional art of appreciating incense, as evoked by the design of the box.
About Geishas
The design of the box is inspired by an ukiyo-e print by Chöki (1780-1809), which shows the geisha Mizue enjoying the fragrance of incense offered to her by her attendant Moto. In Japan, the most prestigious geisha were not only required to have impeccable appearance and manners, but also to be well-versed in the Cha-do tea ceremony, Ka-do flower arranging, Koh-do incense ceremony, Haikai, Waka poetry, Sho-do calligraphy, Go, and Sugoroku, because they had to attend social and business gatherings and sometimes interact with aristocrats, Meishu (the highest-ranking officials in Japan), and literary figures. In fact, they possessed a level of culture that even the children of aristocratic families could not attain. Koh-Do, The Way of Incense, is the perfect collection to introduce you to the world of traditional Japanese incense. It includes a wide assortment of woody, floral, oriental, fresh, and relaxing fragrances. Enjoy a taste of Japan at home with this affordable option. The magnificent design of the boxes is inspired by masterpieces of Japanese art.
